So you want to start a journey into the wonderful small world of macro photography? Here's a quick guide to get you started.
First thing's first, you will need a camera. if you already own a DSLR then skip this, else look below at my recommendations:
BEST Camera for macro photography has to be the Canon 5D MK IV.
Continuing on in their legacy of powerful workhorse cameras, the release of the 5D Mark IV DSLR which is an outstanding still photography option and an able 4K-capable video machine.
If you have the money available then this camera will serve you well for years to come, in macro photography and in all other aspects of photography.
Probably the BEST bang for buck Macro lens available out there will be the LAOWA 60mm f2.8 1x - 2x.
This fully manual lens will give you exceptionally sharp images, at a decent price (~300GBP)
A cheaper alternative to a dedicated macro lens is a pair of Extension Tubes. If you already own a lens, then you can use these extension tubes to make a start into Macro Photography.
These work by getting the lens further away from your sensor and allowing you to focus close to the subject, enlarging it.
This is how I started my macro photography journey and I was very pleased with the results.
If you want to explore this further is have made a video with what you need and also some sample pictures to give you an idea of the results you can get.
Next on the list is lighting. The expensive route would be to get a dedicated macro flash like the: MEIKE MK-MT24II-C
This Flash clips on to the lens and has 2 flash units wirelessly controlled.
You will still need a diffuser as the light will be too harsh.
The cheaper route and the one manny macro photographers prefer is to get a manual flash like the Neewer NW-561 Flash.
Combine this with a flash diffuser like the: Neewer 6x5 inches/15x12.5 centimetres Speedlite Softbox https://amzn.to/3f0km7Q and you'll be able to get the light where you want it for less than 50GBP.
